garden show & giro d’italia

by greenrabbitdesigns

It has been a weekend of two parts and I don’t just mean the weather, the less said about it the better!

The Giro d’Italia has visited our wee country and my Hb being a keen cyclist has been in his element. After the Opening Ceremony on Thursday a time trial was held through the streets of Belfast City on Friday evening and then yesterday the cyclists headed to the north coast and then back to the city in a stage of over 200 km. Today they head off to Dublin before they return to Italy.

The really good thing about Saturday was that the cyclists went through the town of Antrim where very fortunately for me, Garden Show, Ireland was being held as well, so I too got to be in my element.

We watched the race and then headed into Antrim Castle Gardens to see the garden show.

I should warn you that there are a lot of flower photos ahead!!!

Can you tell that I enjoyed myself! I loved the growers pavilion the displays were amazing and most of the plants in the displays were for sale. I bought one of those pretty little orange plants in the photo above, it’s a Geum, Princess Juliana, the colour is so beautiful, it really stood out in the display.

There were some beautiful show gardens too with lovely planting.

And all kinds of quirky little displays.

It wasn’t just about plants and flowers either!

Now as I mentioned at the beginning of this post (which seems a long time ago now) we have had a taste of Italy here this weekend and I don’t just mean the Italian ice cream I had yesterday afternoon!

Giro Collage

Here are all the cyclists (almost 200 of them) from all over the world cycling through Antrim yesterday. There has been a tremendous buzz about the Giro d’Italia coming here and almost everything has been turned pink, the colour of the winners jersey (maglia rosa).

Of course the garden show had to get in on the act too!

So something for everyone this weekend!

Enjoy the new week ahead and thanks as always for visiting! 🙂

Vivienne that was a lovely Saturday you and your HB had. My HB and I watched Giro Di’ltalia cyclist on TV wishing I was there. Your photos of the flower show was brilliant, I loved the blue flower..Sunday was Mothers Day in Aussie land. Have a really good week regardless of weather. Elizabeth x x

I am so very glad you and your husband had such a lovely weekend! The weather has been most temperamental here too with gale force winds, etc. I wish I could have visited the garden show with you.

What a lovely weekend, and it looks as though the weather didn’t spoil the enjoyment. I love all the flowery pics – such beautiful things to buy! I resisted going to the Malvern Spring Show this weekend, because I can’t say no LOL! Have a great week x

What a great weekend that you and your husband could share! I would be more inclined to the flower show than the bikes though! The orange Geum you bought is lovely. I do love orange flowers next to purple. The weather has been awful here – wet and windy! I hope it improves for us all next week. x

This post made me smile from start to finish! We are so similar – my hubby is a keen cyclist, too, and the garden show is just my cup of tea! Whoever organised that show at the same time as the Giro is *genius*!!! Your photos are stunning – I would have walked away with all the plants you photographed, such interesting beauties! And very on trend you are, Carol was showing off geums on Gardeners World this week… 😉 Chrissie x

Wow Vivienne – I love having a nosey around a good garden show. I took my mum to The Chelsea Flower show one year – it was one of the best days ever. I wish I could go every year.
Do you know what the flower/plant is called in your 12th photo (it’s the blue flower)? I’m only asking because I bought the exact same plant a couple of weeks a go, but there wasn’t a label on it, so haven’t got a clue what it is.
Great photos – thanks for sharing.

I enjoyed the giro but was sorry to miss
The garden show. Was antrim castle a better venue than Hillsborough ?

Hi Vivienne, Thanks for taking us to the flower show and to see the bicyclists. My brother David loves racing and bikes. I shared this with him.
Here’s to May flowers……

Hello Vivienne,

Beautiful flowers! I have never been in a flower show (!) but I for sure would love to go! And that giro has been enjoyed in telly here too (by males mostly!), it seems like a huge event where ever it goes? Hilariously-fantastic bike-inspired flower-arrangements there 🙂

Have a lovely day!

Fab post and some lovely photos in there – geums are one of my favourite plants. My husband has been glued to the tv for cycling day after day there is so much on at the moment – he’d be most jealous of yours getting to see the d’Italia but then I guess he gets to see the ‘Yorkshire’ Tour soon enough.
