Rose Week

Last week was Rose Week in Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon Park on the outskirts of Belfast. Just as well it was last week because the weather this weekend has probably destroyed quite a few of the gorgeous roses on display!

Rose Week takes place at this time every year and the roses on view are absolutely stunning. It is always worth a visit and this year, as usual, it did not disappoint.

Sadly you will have to imagine the scent of the roses in the air, it was amazing.

There are beds and beds of these beauties, so many varieties with pretty names.

In fact during rose week it is estimated that there are over 20,000 blooms!!

I’ve been inspired by all this beauty to make some rose-themed bags but more of that next post, hopefully!

I’m afraid our horrible weekend weather has continued into Monday, I can only dream of rose-scented summer days today!

  1. I love Lady Dixon’s… have only been once, and we missed Rose Week this year – so nice to discover your photos… it’s almost as good as seeing it. Must mark it in the diary for next year :))

  2. Wow what a lot of roses, they are stunning!! Bet the smell was amazing! Roses are some of my favourite flowers but I am useless at growing them – always seem to kill them off! Must be the soil or something!!! xxx

  3. I adore roses, so much so I just made some rose petal jelly yesterday, lol, I would love to visit this place 🙂 xxx

  4. The roses are beautiful. I think the white rose is my favourite. Hasn’t the weather been a washout?!!! It has rained here every day since St Swithin’s day. Your last photo is particularly stunning! x

  5. Simply gorgeous, VIvienne! My favorite image is of the nicely manicured lawn with the lovely rose hedge border. I want to have a picnic right there. With a thermos of hot Irish Breakfast tea and proper scones with clotted cream and raspberry jam. And real linen napkins that I don’t have to launder myself afterwards. 😉

  6. How beautiful! We are very fortunate to have some wonderful rose gardens here that are just stunning. The scent that fills the air is gorgeous too!

  7. Thank you for taking me along with you, I could almost smell the roses. More rain for us today, it looks like I’m going to get wet at work today. I hope the sun is out for you!

  8. So beautiful images, Viv! I am a big fan of roses too, and I can imagine the scent of those was wonderful! I am sorry to hear of your horrible weather though, and am sending you some sun again (it’s hot and beautiful here again!), hope it’ll arrive quickly!

    Happy Wednesday!

    Yours,
    Mia

  9. Aren’t they beautiful! I always think they benefit from closer inspection too, and a good sniff of their scent. Lovely! Vanessa xxx

  10. All very lovely, I think my favourite is that delicate pink rose in your last photo. I bet the smell was divine. I have a tube of Cath Kidston rose hand cream on my desk next to the computer and I can’t get enough of that scent.

Haha – yes, I really have NO say in my home, Elsa rules! 😀

  12. Lucky you, that looks like my kind of day out. I would love to go to David Austin’s nurseries, I imagine it would be very similar. Looking forward to seeing your rosey creation Vivienne.

  14. Oh it looks beautiful and I can only imagine the smell. I keep thinking I’d like to add more roses to my garden but I’m ashamed to say I rather neglect the few that I have, they really need spraying as they often get diseased.

    Must try harder 🙂 Bethx

  16. Amazing – can almost smell their perfume. Wet here today again – but then that’s why we have England’s green and pleasant land and Ireland is the Emerald Isle isn’t it?!

  17. Gorgeous roses – and I’m sure the combined scent of all those blooms must have been absolutely wonderful. I’m looking forward to seeing your rosy inspiration soon! The weather here has been like autumn and wellies were a neccessity this morning! Hope summer comes back soon!

Mind you as I couldn’t get out into the garden I was able to make a few new cards..any excuse to craft. I also loved the final of The Apprentice..! Have a great week and I hope the weather improves.
